Visiting the Temple of the goddess Ixchel and the Turtlefarm in Isla Mujeres

Visit Isla Mujeres, a beauty of the Riviera Maya in Mexico. Tortugranja and Temple of the goddess Ixchel, prices, schedules.

In the Riviera Maya is a small island called Isla Mujeres. It is only eight kilometers long and four kilometers wide. We had the opportunity to visit it to realize that it is small in size but great in natural beauty! On our tour we made stops at the Tortugranja (Turtle Farm) and the Temple of the Goddess Ixchel.

How to get to Isla Mujeres?

To go to Isla Mujeres you take a ferry in Cancun. You have to look at the schedules, but they depart quite frequently. The price is $160 pesos round trip per person.

I recommend that you go up to the rooftop of the way, so that you can see the sea that has such a beautiful color, turquoise, it is the most beautiful I have seen of all the seas that I have had the opportunity to appreciate.

Visiting the Tortugranja of Isla Mujeres

When we got to Isla Mujeres, the first place we went was to the Tortugranja (turtle farm) where you can see giant tortoises and other marine animals. But it is not a simple exhibition, no. The main objective of this place is to help the turtle eggs (as its name says turtle farm) to hatch successfully.

What’s the price?
30 pesos per person

What is the schedule?
From 9 AM till 5 PM

Can you take photos?
Yes

In addition to seeing turtles of all sizes, you can also see seahorses, sea cucumbers, starfish among others. There is an area where they have a shark but we could not see it. There was also an area dedicated to the lobster where they explained their life cycle, including reproduction of course.

Going around Isla Mujeres

After visiting the turtle farm, we took a taxi that gave us a tour of the island. The deal was that he would turn us around and also stop at some places so we could take photos. The island is small, so it is done quite quickly (I do not remember how much we paid but if I remember that it was quite cheap, of course as always my advice is to make the deal before starting the trip).

On the way we saw the Garrafón Park, a place where you can practice water sports but hey, we didn’t have time and we didn’t even go inside.

Garrafón Park, well, that’ll be for the next time

Visiting the Mayan Temple of the Goddess Ixchel

On our impromptu tour, the taxi driver stopped at the site of the Mayan Temple dedicated to Goddess Ixchel. Ixchel is the Goddess of Fertility and from the codices, she represented the Moon, wife of the Sun, associated with procreation. One can also leave offerings in the temple.

What’s the price?
30 pesos per person (although we arrived almost when they closed and we did not pay anything, since there was no one at the entrance)

What’s the schedule?
From 9 AM till 5 PM

Can you take pictures?
yes

It is a quite simple temple, but representative. You can see the offerings that are left asking, I imagine, for fertility. Also in the place we also saw a sign that told us that we were in the place that received the first rays of sun in all of Mexico!

And after visiting this place, we continued walking around the island, with the taxi driver who, in addition to not being expensive, was telling us stories about each place, very nice.
